Gatewood Park and Reservoir is 400 scenic acres nestled in the heart of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. Surrounded by the Jefferson National Forest and located near the Town of Pulaski, Gatewood is accessible from Interstates 81 and 77 and offers exciting recreational opportunities for the entire family. Built as a town water impoundment in 1960, the park provides visitors with rest and relaxation through camping, boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and other activities provided by a full time staff.
Boaters and sport fisherman visiting Gatewood have an opportunity to tour one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the region and test their angling skills on the challenging game fish that roam the 162 acre reservoir. With 22 miles of shoreline and water depths ranging to 50 feet, Gatewood is ideal for the growth of many trophy-size largemouth bass, along with a good number of crappie, catfish, bluegill, muskie, and smallmouth bass. The park staff will weigh and measure any catch to determine if it qualifies for a Virginia Game Commission Citation. Because the reservoir is a source of water supply for citizens of the Town of Pulaski, no boats with petroleum motors are allowed. Paddleboats and fishing boats with electric motors are available for rent and private boats with only electric motors may be launched. Equipment, fishing supplies, and some grocery items are available at the park store.
Campers at Gatewood can choose from 42 level sites along the shoreline and beneath the pines, all equipped with water and electrical hookups. A bath facility with hot showers provides some modern conveniences, but the campground's natural appearance reminds visitors of its forested location. Those guests not satisfied with complete relaxation can take advantage of such recreational activities as volleyball, horseshoes, or hiking. Playground equipment is available for the children. Additionally, an ampitheater is provided for nature programs and group activities. Gatewood offers day visitors the use of individual picnic sites, set along the
evergreen covered shoreline.
Gatewood is a well-managed facility with a rustic touch which compliments its wilderness setting. The park features crystal emerald water, active wildlife, and the majestic beauty of surrounding mountain peaks.
