Claytor Lake State Park, nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountains, is located on Claytor Lake, a 4,500 acre, 21 mile long artificial lake on the New River. The lake was created for a hydroelectric project of the Appalachian Power Company. It is named for W. Graham Claytor (1886-1971) of Roanoke, Virginia, a vice president of Appalachian Power who had supervised constructiion of the dam and creation of the lake.
The 472.0 - acre Claytor Lake State Park was established in 1948. The park appeals to a variety of interests with its hiking trails; freshwater swimming beach; boating, sailing, water skiing, and fishing opportunities; wildlife viewing opportunities; and interpretive programs. Other amenities to enhance your visit include a visitor center, beautiful lakeside cabins and large family lodges, rental shelters, camping with full hook-ups, a 200-seat conference center, fuel docks, snack bar, camp store, and the only full-service marina in the Virginia State Park System.
